In the 1970s and 1980s, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science acquired two ancient Egyptian mummies and three coffins. The mummies are the remains of two women who lived in an unknown locale in ancient Egypt. This interdisciplinary volume provides a history of the mummies’ discovery and relocation to Colorado. It guides the reader through various analytical techniques, detailing past research and introducing new data and best practices for future conservation efforts.

HISTORY COLORADO STATE ARCHAEOLOGIST AWARD CEREMONY
Magic Mountain Community Archaeology Project receives State Archaeologist Award and Society for American Archaeology Award for Excellence in Public Education
When Dr. Michele Koons first came to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, it was her goal to bring archaeology and the excitement of the past to the public in a meaningful and hands-on way. Through collaboration with PaleoCultural Research Group, this dream became a reality with the Magic Mountain Community Archaeology Project.  Magic Mountain is one of the most important archaeological sites on Colorado’s Front Range with the earliest artifacts dating back to 9,000 years ago. Over the course of two field seasons, over 3,000 people participated at the the site as volunteer excavators and tour guides, students from K-college, and tour attendees. For these efforts, the project was recognized nationally and by the state of Colorado for its inclusivity and innovate approach. To learn more about this program visit the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.

SCIENCE DIVISION LIVE
The Marvelous Moche Archaeological Culture

This presentation explores the politics and power of the Moche archaeological culture (250-900 CE) of the North Coast of Peru. Moche’s distinct archaeological signatures (exquisitely decorated ceramics, monumental architecture, polychrome murals, metalwork, etc.) have long been seen as the first evidence for a South American state. However, current scholars have begun to pull apart these assumptions and view Moche as a more complex mosaic of interacting settlements across a landscape. Dr. Michele Koons explores the evidence that supports this current trend in thinking.
